Sears and Kmart Were More Than Mere Stores

A Post-Pandemic Reflection – Good Old Days

When my Grandmother left for Heaven, these stores went into severe mourning and began to shut down … that’s how I’ll write the story.

I have sooo many precious memories of me and my grandmother going to Sears, me, running down the aisles and smacking on free popcorn. We knew most of the employees. One ole salesman who ( I know now) was sweet on my grandmother would say, “Come on, Mattie, buy that boy a little toy. He’s been good.” They sure were doing a lot of grinning. And, as it turned out, with everyone in such a mysteriously good mood, I always got my toy.😁

Sears and Kmart were more than stores. They were great historical icons that reflected our transformation into the middle class. You didn’t work on your car with any old tool. You used a Sears Craftsman; you kept the shiny new Craftsman tool box near the car if you wanted to show that you were a shade-tree mechanic with class.

Don’t worry, Gynie (my grandma). We are not going down without a fight. After all these years, there are still a few Sears stores holding on.
