Knowledge…
In this new normal, time and time again, KNOWLEDGE is the difference between success and failure, between getting by and getting by-passed. Things have changed. We know they have changed. Yet, because of human nature and the fear of uncertainty, we resist change and the tools that get us through the clutter and opposition. And so, inevitably, we pay the price.
Here are two simple examples of knowledge-resistant, self-induced misery.
- You should never use cash or debit to make your purchases. Obviously, I am not referring to the old country farmer on the side of the road, selling cantaloupes and watermelons from the back of his pickup truck. I am talking about normal everyday purchases at brick-and-mortar locations that take credit cards.
If I walked up to you and handed you $600 absolutely free, no strings attached, would you take it? Most people would say “yes”. And yet, these “yes” people are making the majority of their purchases with cash. On average, using a no-annual-fee credit card that pays 6% back on $10,000 in purchases during the year would pay you $600 cashback. Just pay the balance at the end of the month and there is no interest. With this KNOWLEDGE, would you still pull out that wad of cash, peel off a twenty, and try to impress someone at the register?
- You should never top off your gas tank. Overfilling your gas tank can cause liquid gas to enter the charcoal canister or carbon filter, which is designed only for vapor, not liquid. Gas in the evaporative system will affect your car’s performance and damage the engine. You’re setting yourself up for a huge repair bill.
If you didn’t already know these things, this new KNOWLEDGE will reduce financial headaches and put you in a better position to operate more proficiently and navigate the pitfalls of life. However, you have to value, not resist the pursuit of KNOWLEDGE.
HERE’S MY POINT: On this Labor Day, re-calibrate your mind. Prepare for a reset. Labor is no longer sitting at a desk, stamping a stack of invoices, or going downstairs to pick up the mail, or loading a box onto a truck. Robots do that now. Labor is knowledge-based. Life is knowledge-based. The more you know about the digitization of the invoices and the automation of mail delivery and robotic execution of freight, the more valuable you become to YOU and everyone around you.
Labor Day is a reset for survival in the new normal, an alternative to standing on the sideline watching the parade pass you by. Whether we like it or not, the old concepts of labor are never coming back again.
