After the devastation of COVID-19, it’s hard to find that silver lining our parents, teachers, and mentors promised would be behind every dark cloud. As ole school visionaries, oblivious to failure, driven by perpetual optimism, we kept on looking.
What we found was a hidden gem, an unsolicited by-product of serendipity that crept out of the shadows of uncertainty and loss, into the marvelous light. What we discovered was “time”, an unappreciated gift handed back to us to dispatch with the prudence or recklessness we felt it deserved.
Some traded in their precious time for the toxic wrangling of the election. Others ground time into a fine power and stirred it rambunctiously into their daily cups of hopelessness and depression. Still others purchased crowd-pleasing, sugarcoated capsules of distraction, mind-numbing athletic replays and freeze frames, freely distributed by the NFL, NBA, AWA, and any other “A” that might cloak reality and take away their pain.
However, not every free agent squandered their time. Some saw it as the valuable commodity that it was … is. They used it wisely to reconnect with their families and, perhaps, more importantly, reconnect with themselves. Through prudence and self-examination, they began to plot the long journey ahead, pass the pink slips and layoffs and shutdowns, back to normal, a new normal that we have never seen before. They used their time to create a vision of the future, and where they fit within that future. That is the priceless insight we hope to share in this forum.
We must rediscover who we are. We must choose our niche, based on the new business protocols of COVID-19. We must build our team so that our businesses have a fighting chance.
